My background is non-traditional and multidisciplinary, spanning from photography and dance to economics and urban planning, with some time spent working freelance in different types of production including book arts, film, and construction. But it is marked by an early devotion and regular return to painting.
Via an exploration of some of the most perennial themes in painting: mark-making, figure-ground relationships, pattern, repetition, depth and surface tension, text, and abstraction; I’m always honing a practice with which to explore movement, language and experience in the world.
In my work I explore the forms, iconography, rituals, colors and surfaces of home, as well as the urban, rural, and suburban landscapes and communities surrounding home, and the degree to which wildness (nature) or conventionality (capitalism and its’ political demands, the strictures of religion and corporation) can be lived in these systems. Identity as a negotiation within this tension is also explored, its language as well a tug of war between heavily marketed mythologies (forms, iconographies) and some naturally or transcendentally sourced alternative.
